Month-by-Month Breakdown

March Early Spring

Spring begins! Temperatures rise, rhododendrons start blooming in the hills. Good for lower-altitude treks. Kathmandu is pleasant. Some haze in the lowlands.

  • Good for: Annapurna treks, Chitwan safari, city tours
  • Temperature: 10-25C
  • Crowds: Moderate

April Peak Spring

The best spring month! Rhododendron forests are in full bloom (especially on the Annapurna and Langtang trails). Warm but not too hot. Mountain views are generally good.

  • Good for: All treks, especially ABC and Poon Hill
  • Temperature: 12-28C
  • Crowds: High (book early!)

May Late Spring

Warm at lower altitudes but excellent for high-altitude treks before monsoon arrives. Last window for EBC trek. Pre-monsoon clouds build in afternoons.

  • Good for: EBC, Three Passes, high-altitude treks
  • Temperature: 15-32C
  • Crowds: Moderate

June August Monsoon Season

Monsoon rains make most trekking routes slippery and cloudy. However, this is the best time for rafting, budget travel (fewer tourists, lower prices), and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (Tibet side stays dry).

  • Good for: Kailash Yatra, rafting, rain-shadow treks (Upper Mustang, Dolpo)
  • Temperature: 20-35C
  • Crowds: Very low

September Early Autumn

Monsoon fades. Skies begin clearing. Landscapes are lush and green. Great time to start trekking with fewer crowds than October. Nepal's biggest festival Dashain falls in September/October.

  • Good for: All treks (fewer crowds than Oct), festivals
  • Temperature: 15-28C
  • Crowds: Moderate

October Peak Season

The single best month to visit Nepal. Crystal-clear skies, perfect temperatures, zero rain, spectacular mountain views. This is when most travelers come book months in advance!

  • Good for: Everything treks, safaris, honeymoons, photography
  • Temperature: 12-25C
  • Crowds: Very high (book 3+ months ahead)

November Late Autumn

Still excellent for trekking with cooler temperatures and thinner crowds than October. High passes start getting cold. Lower treks like Poon Hill and Ghorepani are perfect.

  • Good for: All treks, Chitwan safari, cultural tours
  • Temperature: 8-22C
  • Crowds: Moderate-high

December February Winter

Cold at altitude high passes may be snowed in. But Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan remain pleasant during the day. Great for cultural tours, city exploration, and jungle safaris (excellent wildlife sighting in dry jungle).

  • Good for: City tours, Chitwan, lower treks, Everest Heli tour
  • Temperature: 2-18C
  • Crowds: Low (great prices!)
